Reverend Pedro Silva, from First Congregational Church UCC, will read aloud Brandon Wainright’s autobiographical monologue, ‘Trying to Live I Lost My Life’, from the JustUs project.
Brandon Wainright’s powerful monologue is about one man’s story of navigating life when surviving and thriving are at war with each other. It is a profound reflection on racism, poverty, and carceral systems which ignore humanity. After the reading, Rev. Silva will share the personal and theological impact of reading Brandon Wainwright's story, followed by Brandon sharing his own reflections of listening to Rev. Silva reading his story.
Motus Theater collaborates with faith leaders across the country to step into the shoes of our Motus monologists by reading aloud their stories. These strategic collaborations with faith leaders invite congregations to get to know people who are formerly incarcerated (JustUs monologists), through powerful stories from their lives. Listeners will be inspired by the courage of these stories, while also learning about the impact of policies in the criminal legal system.
“I feel like knowing others is the path to knowing God. And that the love that God offers people, we only know that love when we offer it to others. And the degree to which we hold back loving others is the degree to which we don't know God.”
