Alicia Svigals, klezmer violin | Marilyn Lerner, piano
Event Description:
CU at the Dairy presentsThe Yellow Ticket, a multimedia event featuring a rare 1918 silent film and an original film score performed live by klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals(founder of the Grammy-winning group, The Klezmatics) and jazz pianist Marilyn Lerner (Toronto’s virtuoso new-music pianist).
The film stars an adolescent Pola Negri, who would later become the legendary femme fatale of the silent era, and tells the story of a young Jewish woman from a Polish shtetl who is constrained by anti-Semitic restrictions to lead a double life in a brothel while attempting to study medicine in Tsarist Russia.
The film also includes precious footage of the former Jewish quarter of Warsaw and the people who once lived there. Joined by Yonatan Malin (faculty member in the College of Music and Program in Jewish Studies at CU Boulder), David Shneer (Chair of Religious Studies at CU), and Harumi Rhodes(Assistant Professor of Violin), this production will bring together cultural awareness in music, film and discussion.
