A Tribute to John Williams (9/29) and Infinite Space (10/13 & 10/14)
 
The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra will kick off its 2018-19 season, themed “Open Space,” with two concerts. The orchestra presents A Tribute to John Williams on Saturday, September 29, 7:30 p.m. at Macky Auditorium. The opening masterworks concerts, Infinite Space, will be presented at Macky on Saturday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. and Pinnacle Performing Arts Complex in Denver on Sunday, October 14 at 2 p.m.

The September 29 concert features music by John Williams, considered America’s greatest living composer for film, including Star Wars, E.T., Jaws, Harry Potter, Schindler’s List, Jurassic Park and more. The concert is sponsored by Emily & John Koechel; ticket prices range from $15-$84.This concert is part of a new three-concert Pops Series, which includes Pixar in Concert on March 23 and The Music of David Bowie on May 4. Series buyers receive 10% off single ticket prices.

The Boulder Phil’s main series opens on October 13 with Infinite Space, a concert dedicated to the exploration of space. The programming honors the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Holst’s The Planets, accompanied by a unique visual reimagining that explores the emotional context of a piece written during the depths of World War I. The concert opens with Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst and continues with James
 
Stephenson’s Celestial Suite, inspired by pioneering astronomers throughout history, featuring projections of NASA images from space. A free pre-concert talk hosted by Marilyn Cooley of Colorado Public Radio, with Music Director Michael Butterman; astronomer Kyle Kremer; Dr. David Brain of CU’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics; and other guests will begin at 6:30 p.m. The concert is sponsored by Anonymous, Nancy Clairmont and Bob Braudes, Suzanne and David Hoover, and Beatriz and Juan Roederer. Ticket prices for October 13 range from $15-$76. The concert will be performed again on October 14 at Pinnacle PAC in Denver. Other events presented by the Boulder Philharmonic in September and October include free musical hikes on September 29 (Viola with High Altitude); October 5, 11 and 12 (Meet the Planets!); and October 28 (The Secret of Wind and Birds). A Back to School Brunch will be held in a private home on October 14, as a fundraiser for the Phil’s education programs. On October 16 at noon, the Boulder Phil Brass Quintet presents a free chamber music concert with music from Dvorák, Albeniz and more in collaboration with Boulder Ballet. This free event is part of the Third Tuesday Lunchtime Concert Series at the Boulder Public Library’s Canyon Theater, sponsored by the Boulder Library Foundation.
